[tech] ignition probs--please help!

i know most of you won't know this off the top of your head, but any help
would be truly appreciated.

the short version: where does the hall sender (16v, same as 8v?) get it's
power (terminal 3) from? current diagram in bentley (near as i can read it)
says the ignition control unit. i don't see it. you can stop reading
here--this is mainly what i'm looking for. if you're feeling generous, and
want to read more:

long version:
driving pretty hard in the new rocco. when i start up from a light, it bucks
and dies. quick check shows no spark. tested everything in bentley (except
knock sensor). nothing from hall sender when cranking. power to hall sender
was 3-4 volts (bentley says it should be 12). is this enough to cause there
to be no spark? for kicks, replaced distributor and knock box. timing belt
intact.

any ideas?

my understanding of ignition system (don't need to read this to answer the
question):

power goes to hall sender-->distributor turns, hall sender sends out timed
voltage signal to knock box-->knock box modifies timing based on input from
knock sensor-->modified timing signal sent to icu-->icu acts kind of like a
relay, and switches power to coil-->power to distributor cap-->power to plug
wires

thanks,
-michael
