One basic fact holds true here. Any time you try to put the opposite head
on a block you have to change several things.

For the 16v head to 8v block, you change the crank pulley, intermediate
shaft and oil pump. Also plug the distributor hole. Compression is roughly
8:1.

For the 8v head on 16v block. Same changes as above except you ADD the
distributor and the correct distributor gear. You get 13+:1 compression.

For both swaps you have to also consider how to set up the alternator/AC
compressor mounting brackets and pulleys. For ABA based swaps the exhaust
also becomes an issue.

Another swap would be the solid lifter head onto the ABA or 3A block. This
requires a change of the oil pump to the solid lifter unit and clearancing
of the oil pump drive shaft for the 2.0 crank. The Distributor gear also
has to be changed.

As a result of watching many of these swaps being done, my conclusion is;

If you have a 16v already....drop in a 2.0 9A block and be happy. Talk to
Shannon Fenton
If you have an 8V already....upgrade to a high compression 1.8 RD block or
go all out for the Audi 3A or ABA and you only have to change the
Distributor. Talk to Brian MacGarvey
If your insane and have to be different to be cool, build a hybrid. Talk to
Brian Honnold

I hope this thread isn't quite dead yet. I have been following it and I
didn't see anyone mention the other 2.0 block, the 3A. Maybe because it was
a Audi motor. The volkswagen.org engine swap page has some nice comparisons
between the ABA and the 3A for VW A1 upgrades. I was hoping for a 3-way
comparison.
I am keeping this in the back of my mind for the distant future, probly a
CIS-E 1.8 16v head on just the 2.0 bottom end. It would be nice to pole the
2.0 converters out there for what they used and what they would do
different. Craig, Shannon, come to mind.
