CV shaft still spins when in gear?

Today I was removing the CV shafts from my car, alone. When in gear I was able to stop the drivers side shaft from moving, and was able to loosen the six 12pt bolts. I then removed the shaft, and went on to the passenger side. Now when I put it in gear the shaft still spins freely. Is this because I removed the other shaft, or is my trans have a problem? Thanks for any replys-
