16v identifiers

Well, from the outside, gererally I look for the 16v markers or even the
body kit.  If you know anything about engines, you can look inside and
know... And I have an '83 wolfsburg that is 8v....

Is there any way to tell an 8v from a 16v visually? Are wolfsburgs 
both 8s and 16s or just 16s?
