Ok - my gears have been cranking ever since I bought the 84 cabby. I =
need lots of input...Cash is a factor (seeing as my soon-to-be-married =
ass has very little right now). The car will most likely be driven by my =
soon-to-be wife as a commuter when it's raining and it will double as =
our tooling around in the sun car. I will use it when the 'roc =
undergoing lengthy improvement (e.g., paint prep, suspension =
reconditioning...). As such, power is not super-critical, but I feel if =
you're going to do it, you should do it as best as possible within your =
limits. As I've mentioned before, a 1.8t is way beyond me at this =
time...

I've got one guy, who I know, will sell me an ABA block w/ < 50k on it. =
$350. Obviously, it would work with my existing injection, rebuild not =
necessarily required. But the JH head, currently installed, would most =
likely need the rebuild. Of course, there are the additional expenses of =
throwing an ABA into an A1. Longer DP, dist., etc...Less work overall, =
moderate $'s spent, less power. An ABA with a 4k is not that bad, right? =
Hell, it goes pretty good with just the JH and the 4k!

OR

I'm in contact with a guy in Santa Cruz with a r-ended '90 Jetta GLI =
willing to sell me the carcass with 9A 2.0 16v engine/ 2y tranny, =
motronic injection, drive train - basically whatever's left of his =
parting out for $750 (w/ ~175k - would require rebuild (by me)). Problem =
is I gotta haul it here and dispose of it. Could recoup some funds on =
parting the rest of it out...Maybe some interior and other mechanical =
parts can be rigged in? 2.0 16v, with 4k or 2y, possible larger brakes, =
driveshafts, maybe even Jetta seats? (haven't seen what's left and the =
guy seems to communicate poorly though email)...Obviously, lots more =
work, but lots more upside...

- Space is not an issue so long as the Jetta doesn't sit in my carport =
for a year.=20
- I still have Randy B's engine hoist
- Since I'd be rebuilding both heads, I definitely go with a DIY polish =
job....Draw
- 2 cams vs. 1....advantage ABA
- Power....advantage 16v

I could go on and on with the debate, but I want to hear your opinions!

This is why I love the list! Thanks in advance, one and all! :)

Jeff
