My experience was (a few years ago):

Donor car: 1981 Scirocco
Recipient: 1978 Scirocco

- Splash shields cut (slight snip) rather than swapping, slight
clearance trouble.
- Calipers, hoses, pads, rotors and LUG NUTS swapped. Why nuts?

Because after we put the car back on it's snowflake rims and tried to
test drive it we got a horrible noise before even getting a few feet.
Closer inspection found long lug nuts projecting far enough to scrape
'new' calipers, scrounged around and found other set of (also authentic)
VW lug bolts and used them as they were shorter in length.

No problems since.
