cardboard thing on top of the rad have a purpose?

The side deflectors are a differnt story. They do help and especially if
you change from AC to non-AC. The removal of the condensor takes up alot
of the airflow space on the right. Since is much like waterwhen it comes
to flowing, it will goto the path of least resistance meaning, it likes
to go around the radiator instead of the prefered THRU method. I had
light issues with "running hotter than I liked" and made a little air
baffle out of tin and some weather stripping that effectively seals the
whole right side of the radiator bay off to any air flow. Cooling got
much better. 

If you cant locate used deflectors, try and fab up some of your own with
MDF or something similar. Just needs to be weather resistant. (so it
doesnt fall apart like cardboard or rust like steel.) The little
deflectors are kinda like cardboard....
