big ol' "ARGH" with ball joints

I intended to change my suspension bushings on the front a-arms but it 
turned into a nightmare when the ball joint shafts wouldn't come out.  I 
pried, hammered from the top, and cursed for 2 hours.  How do these things 
come out?  I couldn't make them budge at all.

I assume it's nearly impossible to change the bushings without removing the 
entire a-arm.
