this might be the last straw



This is an issue of debate.  I believe the original reason for the chain
drive was that the VR6 was supposed to be offered in a diesel version, and
all they (VAG) were going to do was plop on a different head at the factory.
Save time and labor and such designing two different blocks, assembly lines,
etc.

I'm 99 percent sure that the head is not interference, but if you shave the
head and throw a 268-ish cam on it, it might be.

But if anything a Turbo VR6 needs a thicker headgasket or some 9:1 pistons,
which makes the possibility of hitting the valves less.
