gas needle gone impotent

After driving merely 70 miles or so, and almost home I noticed my gas =
needle at 1/4 tank. Alarmed at first, it then started to rise again, =
for what would be it's last hoorah. When I got home it was hoovering at =
1/2 tank, so I made nothing more than a mental note.
The next morning after only 2 miles of a 40 mile commute, that sucker =
was plumb red. Worried I pulled into the first available gas station =
and much to my delight only put in 2.6 gallons of fuel.=20
Is this a simple fix? I'm assuming this is the bobber thing, but don't =
know jack squat about these matters.
