Not really hard.

You will need (in additional to normal tools)

- Twelve point (triple square) 8 mm driver for CV bolts. (Only very
early Rabbits [Golf 1] came with Torx or Allen bolts, don't substitute
lest you strip them there bolts out.

- 30 mm socket and breaker bar for same to spin axle nut off. 

- CV boot and/or CV and/or grease to replace, repack joint.


It helps to have a partner so you can idiot check yourself or to spin
the axle while you loosen/tighten but it can be done by yourself.

You might get lucky and find it's just the CV bolts have backed out but
no real damage has been done.
