speedo accuracy

I think it depends on which speedo you are using too. I tested the speedo
in my Rabbit Diesel Pickup and it is off 1/10th every mile!!! So if I am
going 60, I'm actually going 66 and 70 is 77 and so on (hey, now, I can get
there going downhill!). My speedo in my Rabbit which is a German KM speedo
is much more accurate. I think on average it would be fairly reasonable to
say that most speedos are off about 2% to 5% at higher speeds and less at
lower speeds. If I thought about it I'm sure I could figure out why speedos
are less accurate at higher speeds mathematically but I'm too lazy. At
first I thought it was the flexibility of the cable making it unable to keep
up with the speed of the vehicle but that energy has to go somewhere and
eventually it would just twist off everytime you drive so it must be
something in the speedo itself. Probably has to do with the higher tension
of the spring on the needle at higher speeds! HTH
