(ot, but vw related) stereo wiring

  i'm going to be putting a new head unit into my passat since my stock head 
unit just took a crap on me, but i'm sort of confused. the passat is a 91 
with the actif stereo, that is the door speakers are amped. can i just put 
my sony explod cd player on a factory wire harness adapter and plug it right 
up? i've heard that if you have the amped door speakers you need to rewire 
the whole speaker set up and switch to non-amped speakers, but this doesn't 
seem right to me. anyone out there switch the head unit in there passat or 
jetta or golf with this stereo set-up before?
