The trick is keeping the strut shaft from turning when you try to loosen
the
22mm nut. Any ideas there?

Yeah, in a junk yard, clamp a ViseGrip on the shaft, between the springs
as tight as you can get it. 

Or use the special strut nut tool.

Or an impact driver might work, (the kind you use with a hammer).

Or bring a small 9 gallon air tank and a 1/2" impact gun, that should be
enough for 2 quick blasts.
