I see on Amazon that the book is for 74-84 water-cooled cars. Is there
enough useful info for Sciroccos above 84 (specifically 88) to make it
worth the $50+ used price?

$50 for a USED Bentley ('85-93 A1)? That's ridiculous, you should be
able to find a new one for less.

I bought mine from the dealer for $43 a few years ago. It was later
replaced by Bentley, with the correct 16V distributor rotation. The
older A1 '85 and up Bentleys have the 16V distributor going clockwise,
CW, like the 8 valve. Since it runs off of the exhaust cam, it should
only rotate counter clockwise, CCW.
