help!- especially NC listers

i just put a rebuilt 87 1.8l 16v engine and an 84 020 tranny in a 1987 rocco 
and the engine turns but it will not crank. i havent really narrowed the 
possibilities of what could cause it yet. any suggestions would be 
appreciated. i say especially nc listers because if someone wants to swing 
by and have a look at the problem then they are more than welcome.
