Prep work for painting

The auto paint store will know what you are talking about, just ask for
metal prep (Metl-Prep?). it removes rust and etches the steel's surface.
This is not the same stuff as that which turns rust black. That is a
'conversion coating'. It will work, but the metal prep is simpler and
quicker.
