colder plug

I'm remembering that the part number of the plug is related to the
hotness or coldness of the plug. So going from an R45 to an R46 for
example means it's essentially the same plug but has a different
temperature rating. A good FLAPS should be able to tell you based upon
what is recommended for your car and then which plug to get to get a
colder plug.

To this end I had also read that the sparkplug crossreference books are
updated each year and for the same car the plug is changed I think to a
hotter plug to assist burning oil that is probably getting past the
rings. At least that's the theory, I don't think manufacturers actually
update the books. Perhaps plugs have a wider operating range then in
past years.

If I remember (from my air cooled days) cooler involves a longer center
tower on the plug, moving it away from the threads and heat of the
block.

You may not find it in the VW lists but might in Audi or other Euro
motor that has the same thread and bore size.
