rod out the cat

Hi,
My 87 16V has developed an annoying problem. There is a loud rattle in
the exhaust. I went to tighten the system. Nothing was loose. It appears
the is a loose piece of catalytic convertor. Of course its in the front
part. If I rod out the whole cat will it be very noticable? In an 88
Grand Am I had, I had to rod out the cat and it had a hollow ring. It
failed inspection.
BTW the GA was fast, it had the quad 4. Problem was every 50K it needed
a headgasket.
