Re: grinding gears



It sounds like a typical VW malady - bad 2nd gear synchro but I
haven't heard of one quite as bad as you've described.  Usually once
the gear oil warms up, the grinding goes away.  The 1-2 upshift will
require some effort to develop a "sweet spot" for the grinding to
stop, the 3-2 downshift will probably go away if you rev-match. 
Other than that, you'll have to open the case and replace the 2nd
gear synchro.
