Sounds like the clutch is on it's way out, but it also sounds like you
have some time...

I recommend replacing the auto-adjust clutch cable with a manual cable.

I've seen the auto-adjust cable cause all kinds of problems, too much
tension causing the clutch push rod to machine the thrust plate... 
I've seen the auto-adjust cables saw half way through the part that the
clutch cable cable stop, the part of the trans that the cable adjusts
against.

I don't think that a manual clutch cable is a "cure all", but at under
$20 it's cheap insurance, (or assurance) EVERY 16V Scirocco should have
one.
