Clutches and the state of the art

Well, if it ain't one thing it's another! Now, in addition to my
exhaust problem that I have not been able to afford to fix yet, my
clutch is slipping under heavy loading. So, I guess it is time to get
a new clutch. In the past, I have always had the attitude that a
clutch was a clutch, but I have seen a lot of people on this list
with 'organic' clutches, or other non-standard clutch setups. So, I
was thinking I should look into this before replacing my clutch.

What are the different types of clutches out there, and what benefit
at what cost do the different types provide?

The goal is to overcome the deliberate nature of the process.
