RE: Losing ground during cranking.



I fixed the same problem this way last spring on my Scirocco.  My
brother-in-law also had that problem with his old '83.  It was quite a while
before I realized that when I turned the ignition switch on, the dash lights
would light, but as soon as I turned it to the start position, they would go
out.  Until that point, I was running a wire from my battery to the coil to
get it to start.

If this is how your idiot lights behave, get a new ignition switch and take
the 15 minutes to install it.

My brother had a similar problem in his 83 rabbit truck.  It would crank
over but not start and keep running unless you turned the key back a little
bit.

Have you replaced  the electrical portion of the ignition switch($15).  That
is what it sounds like.
