You're right, Josh, losing just the ring gear wouldn't cause the engine to
die.  You'd have to lose the flywheel itself (which most certainly will let
the engine die if it drops below some certain rpm...Chris).

It's not unknown that a ring gear on the flywheel can come unattached. Ford
had a recall on it on some of their F-150's a few years back...

Granted, I don't see how your engine would have died because of that.

Wouldn't that mean 9 bolts letting go simultaneously?  It's been about 16
months since I've had one apart, but that's the number of bolts I seem to
recall.  Otherwise I think there would have been some sort of problem that
would have been evident before the failure, as some of the bolts were
backing out.

Interesting.  Now has anyone actually ever had this happen?  Seems like
it would be a one in a million thing.  Also would question the mechanic's
abilities.
