Fixed my idling problems!!!

I fixed my idling problem with my '81 with JH...

Problem: Upon initial start-up, the car idled real low and lousy. Then,
after a little warm-up it idled fine, but after a lot of driving it would
ilde too high (in the 1200-1500 range). I initially though that the problem
was the oxygen sensor because I found the wire burned out of it. But
replacing it did nothing to change the problem.

The problem turned out to be the auxilary air regulator. Actually it was the
hose that leads from the auxiliary air regulator to the intake manifold. The
hose had a big slice in it that was sucking in tons of air. The hose itself
felt much to pliable. It was almost sucking itself closed. Luckily I have
the parts from my Rabbit GTI, so I just replaced the auxiliary air regulator
and all of the attaching hoses from the GTI.

Now it runs awesome--no idling problems whatsoever!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking that this extra un-metered air was
making me run really lean and causing a hotter exhaust temperature which
burned out the oxygen sensor. Does that make any sense?

I changed the plugs and they looked really fried--they were also tough to
remove from the plug holes, even though I always use anti-sieze on the
threads.

With my idling problem fixed, I'll be going to get my smog test done. Wish
me luck.
