Performance and fuel economy

My car isn't getting the performance that it should for some reason. 
 At the moment its outperformed by my 87 Jetta GL, (acceleration 
etc.) And my Jettta gets better fuel economy as well.

Fuel economy isn't that great, I know it should be better...

Any suggestions?

I know this is kind of vague but I don't have a clue.
