[OT] 91 camry

im sorry, its OT, but you guys know so much...

my friend has a 91 camry (2.0 16v DOHC EFI) with lots of miles on it.  
Occasionally when you hit the gas, the motor will accelerate, then 
return to idle, but the idle is higher than normal.  Accelerate again, 
and afterwards the idle is lower than normal.  Hit the throttle again, 
and the car sputters and struggles, spits out alot of black smoke, and 
almost stalls.  EFI problems?  or something else?  im working on 
convincing him to get a VW ;)
