Tranny swap a success (non-roc)

What would I do without this list?

Friday night saw the arrival of several friends including a
few Scirocco listers (Matt Marcowicz, Jason [The Mad
Bastard], Jason Cammisa, Eric Person, Dan May...) to my
place. The task at hand was to convert my recently
acquired Passat Wagon from an automatic to a 5 speed.
(Well, Dan was just coming to pick up his "new" '84
Scirocco) Work didn't begin in earnest until about 1 PM
Saturday, but when it did there was hardly any stopping.
At 11 PM we started the car, though not without a couple
minor glitches. (Ya ever notice how a 2.0 16v smells funny
when it revs right to redline on initial crank-up?)

Moved the car a couple feet and tapped the brakes - problem
was that the brake pedal stayed depressed after I moved my
foot off it. After some headscratching etc we decided it
had been a long day and we should think it over with the
help of some alcohol.

Today, we ended up swapping the brake booster. That seemed
to be the problem because when it was removed, pieces came
out of it. Fired up the car, moved it a few feet and hit
the brakes - hey, they work! So Jason C, Ben Harder (who
had to miss most of the weekend because of his cousin's
wedding), and Eric Person promptly jumped in the car and we
took off for the gas station since the car had almost no
gas in it. Other than severely needing an alignment, the
car drove really well.

I can NOT thank everyone who was here this weekend enough
for all the labour they put in on this project. Without
the help of all these folks, it would have taken me at
least a month to do this swap.
