Vibration

Well, if you all remember me complaining about driving from Olympia WA to LA
with a vibration right after I had my new wheels installed with a fresh
balance and alignment, I have found the problem. I wouldn't post something
like this unless I thought it was useful so here goes!! The rims I bought
for my car were not hub centric meaning that the hole in the center of the
rim doesn't fit snug on the hub of the wheel like factory wheels do (well,
most). Since I didn't install these things myself, I didn't know that they
weren't hub centric and, of course, the tire shop didn't tell me which I
believe they should've since they are professionals and should reccomend hub
rings if there aren't any there. So, on my second visit to the tire shop to
get the wheels balanced correctly (since there was a horrid vibration after
the installation and original balance) they still neglected to tell me. So,
I replaced a ball-joint and had the alignment done the day before I left for
LA (CA). I also got a reply on this subject once posting to the list why my
car vibrates more after I installed new wheels and someone told me that the
wheels may not be hub centric and that I needed hub rings. When I removed
the wheel to replace the ball-joint, I noticed when I reinstalled the wheel
that I had to line up the lug bolt holes like on an old beetle and thought
that was a little weird. Well, I got the first set of hub rings and
Discount Tire installed them for me free and said that they seemed to fit
very snug on the hubs. At this time, the vibration was much less but I
figured I still had to rebalance the wheels with the hub centric rings in
the wheels. Well, just did it today and viola!!! The vibration is gone.
For the first time in 5 months, my car is vibrationless (well, mostly--if
you don't count the poly everthing and poly motor mount!!). Anyway, thought
you all would be interested if you have a weird vibration that feels like an
out of balance wheel but have had them balanced already to no avail, then
check to see if the wheels are hub centric. If not, try what I did!!!
HTH!!
