[TECH]Non-A/C Alt mount...RE: Premature AC removal(questions)

Hey to all the people that I spouted off at about the a/c brackets I think
a little tech discussion is in order as i am starting to have my doubts
that what I said was correct. And others may have already been thru this
lazyass solution.

Ok.
Here is what I have seen to date.
I have seen the with A/C mount in person on my 16v. i just finished a
waterpump replacement.

I just deinstalled at NON-A/C alternator mount off an 8v.

Also on the EFnet #vwscirocco directed me to the
www.scrocco16v.com site and I saw pictures of the non-A/C mount. A smaller
version of the boat anchor for the A/C version.

Here is my hypothesis.
http://www.scirocco16v.com/Images/new_mods/P0001649.jpg
shows a picture of the non-A/C (left) and A/C(right)

Hmm what is the best way to say this.
look on the top of the non-A/C mountnotice the bracket that has the long
6mm bolt that goes thru it and a 13mm(head) both that bolts to the block
on the right hand side or(drivers side if on motor) That appears to mount
EXACTLY in the same manner the pivot point of the 8v non-A/C alternator
bracket. IMPORTANT. this mounting style would place the alternator at the
top of the motor located similarly to the stock location of the 16v (with
A/C) and 8v location. I think the adustment arm with the cool gear
adjustment could be also used by possibly trimming it a little if
required. I'll go look again at the Yard. but I am fairly sure this might
actually work.

My understanding was that people wanted to lose the weight of the anchor.
not just reduce it as is shown in this picture. IF the swap is sucessful
which my estimate it will be as VW hates to not retool very often if ever.
I have to admit I do not have access to an ETKA to look. and I'm not
dissasembling my 16v again down to the waterpump to check. But if there is
somebody out there with a 16v sitting around that it would be easy to
check I'll mail you the complete kit to try out. Im guessing that if
you look up the part for a 8v alternator belt it will be the right one.

Remember engineers absolutely hate to change things that already work. and
every change in purchasing requires a renegotiation of cost.
