Need help asap...In the process of changing the timing belt

I am changing th t-belt on my 1986 16V.

 If the #1 cylinder is at top dead center does it matter if it is on the
exhaust or intake stroke and will the distibuter only point to the #1 spark
terminal when the car is at top dead center?

Also the bently says that you must remove the coolant pulley, is that right
and is that only pully that I have to remove?

respond as soon as possible, i wnat to finish today.
