RE: "easy" engine performance mods?

IMHO

i've been going through various sites and seen specs on fellow listers'
cars to see what kind of mods i can make that don't require a full-out
engine transplant (and everyone still says to drop in a 2 liter)

but two things bother me about the PL. it's not torquey enough below 3k -
and with my tt exhaust and the way cops bust folks here in the city, i
don't want to cause unnecessary attention when driving and need that extra
umph to pass some lamers hogging up lanes. so, i'd like to get a bit more
low-end out of the engine. (i especially like 2nd gear and 3-6k around the
city : )

>Your best bet is the euro intake cam and a fuel enrichment module. The cam
is fairly simple to install and following along in the book should take you
not much more than 2 hours to do. The module is a no brainer and takes 2
minutes to do. I take mine on and off all the time when making adjustments.
The 1.8 sweet spot is really rippin bout 4200rpm, but below 3K it just cant
muster the grunt. The euro intake cam will help this. Many people told me
that it would not, just be realistic. It moved the spot start a little lower
in the rev range and fattened it up all the way to 7250. I could hit the rev
limiter in 3rd gear after the cam on my old 1.8.

second, maybe it's perception on my part (i'm sure the passenger notices)
but when i gun it on the freeway on-ramps (btw, don't you hate it when
folks take their time on these??? wtf?) the engine sometimes feels lacking
in that extra boost needed to "get there faster".

>look where you are starting in the rev range. Inclines I found tend to kill
the 1.8 no matter where you are in the rev range(love my 2.0). Again the cam
will help this a little.

i've read that an a2 throttle body on a PL engine setup does good things
(but what exactly - can folks share their experiences?). which brings me to
another question - if porting and polishing is "just" removal of material
to match up two pieces, can't i just take a dremel to it and meticulously
get it done? this would be a fun project to do.

>I think you can for all intensive purposes the A1 PL TB is the same as any
A2 PL TB. The intake manifold size didn't change to my knowledge. You can
always port match the TB and manifold if you enjoy using a dremel.

also, i guess tossing in another camshaft would be another option??

>Umm...yeah.

i can take all responses, recompile and re-post for FAQ purposes (to Brett
for the .org site?)

thanks!
