JH 1.8s had solid lifters; 83-84 GTI, 84-88 8V Sciroccos, A1 Cabby's,
but don't know what years.
The 1.7 head is not the same. Valves where lots smaller and I think it
didn't have the large front oil return passage. 
Not recommended for 1.8 or 2.0 because you would have NO power.
