speedo doin' jitterbug (then dying)

  well, finally got around to replacing the speedo cable end (thanx to
ron pieper) in my '84 tonight. drove off and it started shakin' like a
guitar string does. finally shifted once more and it just up and quit.
ideas? also, i noticed before and this time that the speedo was reading
20mph or so higher than what it should've. it's a 4k tranmission in an
8v with a 120mph speedo. i used a white gear (as i've heard of other
doing with okay results). any ideas on why my speed is off so bad?
