hrmm,

I've heard that overall, Audi engines are quite a bit better engineered than
VW's.  Not sure about the 1.7, but the 1.9 had nicer, forged piston rods and
crank, cleaner casting and probably could be taken pretty far by a
determined enthusiast.  Turbo, super, NO2?  Should be able to blast an
"Audi" engine to higher rpms.

How come you're not replacing the burnt bearing?

maybe if the oilpan will fit on a newer 1.8 or 2.0 vw and it's bigger, you
could salv. that.
