Years ago I thought I had problems with fuel starvation in right hand
sweepers. I tore into the tank to find everything inside the tank in
proper working order. Other non-transfer pump Scirocco's have the exact
same symptom as you describe. Some can be lower on fuel, others need more
fuel to keep from starving. 

The cure:
Add fuel! Seriously. When I autox, I must have at least 1/2 tank of fuel
or I get fuel starvation, depending on the course. That's the simple fix.
