I thought the only rational for using steel braided lines was to help prevent fading, especially when all the lines are hot.

Steel braided lines are actually teflon lines with a stainless steel braid around the outside to protect them. The teflon tubing is very resistant to expansion, thus giving a firmer pedal feel than the stock rubber lines... especially when the stock lines you replace are 10 years old!

Lines won't affect brake fading; that's either an issue with pads, or you are boiling brake fluid within the caliper.
