Need some more help with CV job

I got both of the axles off the car and they're in my basement right now. I 
took off the boots but now I'm having trouble getting the outer joints off. 
I used a hammer with a good amount of force but I didn't want to go 
overboard and @#$% up my bearings. Any suggestions on how to get them off 
without breaking anything? TIA
