Odd Problem, Non Rocco

My friend had a 90 Jetta GL Wolfsburg Edition. It's a GL so it's a 1.8 8v.
A problem developed with it tonight while he was driving. He went to take
off from a stop and the car shuttered like as if he was doing something
wrong with the clutch in 1st gear then it quit. It just started doing this
randomly. Now you start the car and it idles perfect, sounds great, but
when you put it in first and go to take off it rolls like a foot and wants
to go but the engine just quits like someone turned the key off. No shutter
or anything, just quits. It's seems like it's in first gear okay, because
it starts to take off like it normally would, that is before it quits.
Anyone have any ideas on this? I am baffled myself. When he did it in front
of me, I had to look at the key twice to make sure it was actually still in
the on position. He recently, like 2 months ago, had the clutch replaced
and the flywheel was machined at the same time, but this doesn't seem like
a clutch problem to me.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

P.S. Sorry for the non-rocco content, but I feel bad for him since he just
dumped a ton of money into the car for the clutch and brakes. Trying to
help him out a bit.
