Re: 2H or 4K - models?

I've read the old European Car mag article on the "dreaded self-machining tranny syndrome"... is this inevitable, or do some seem to survive? (in my case, a 150k mile 4K with no signs of damage, and an unknown history, but smooth quiet shifting, etc.). Is there an update or FAQ on this?
Thanks, Chris

2H: 83 GTI
4K: 84 GTI, most 84 Sciroccos, and possibly the 84 Jetta.
