  The Bentley I was referring to in my earlier reply is the '85-'93
Cabrio/Scirocco.  The 80-84 manual should have similar instructions.
I would think that the shift linkage bushings would have to literally be
absent to cause the problem you have described.  My '87 had bushing that
were extremely worn, yet first and fifth were not as elusive as you say
yours are.  I'd still check the rod clamp.
If you decide to install a bushing kit (and I recommend it, they are
inexpensive and make a large improvement), get it from the Potterman
(Virtual World Parts), Peter (TT), or other loyal lister/supplier. We must
support our own....
