Hey Jay...the VR6 uses a timing chain.  These never usually "break", the chain
tensioners sometimes need replacement on high mileage Vr's...
all I can say about the VR6 is that it ROCKS!  My '93 VR6 Passat has over 180k
and the thing pulls to redline like it's nothing!  Still has the *original*
head gasket (not for long the way I drive it) and the original timing chain.
I'd say that the engine is fairly solid amongst the annoying accessories that
break...like heater core, secondary water pumps...etc.  There are some *really*
expensive parts on a VR6!
  If this car was a 5-speed I'd say go for it...but those good 'ol automatics
are just known all too well for dying horribly.
Just buy it and convert it to a 5-speed!  (ask Daun for the details...)
