Ok, pressing the gas pedal only opens a flap, but that flap lets more air into the engine, which causes the injection system to add more fuel.  It doesn't change the mixture like it does on a carbed car, but its bound to make some difference in starting (after all, opening that flap sure makes a difference once its running!)

BTW, it sounds like you have a problem with the 5th injector or thermo-time switch.

  see, i have to disagree with this. i can crank the engine, but no 
start unless i hit the gas pedal at the right time. elsewise i'll crank 
and crank then eventually it'll catch. poor man anti-theft system, i 
guess.
