Re: Differences between 8v and 16v

Rich,
Some highlights from the magazines below. For the complete
articles, go to www.scirocco16v.org and click on "Press"

Jason

R/T:
h body-color bumpers, air dam, mirrors, skirts, and cast-alloy wheels with
sculptured holes that look as though they force cooling air to or from the
brakes, depending on which side of the car they are no. There's also a new
radio antenna at the back of the roof, sloping aft like an aircraft
antenna. Colors are limited to red, black, and silver.

For the 16-valve, the springs are shorter and thus stiffer; the rear
anti-roll bar is larger and shock damping is increased. There's also a
cross-brace between the front suspension arms to increase lateral rigidity.
Tire size is increased to 185/60HR-14 on 6-in. wheels. Braking performance
has been improved by fitting 9.4-in. solid rear discs in place of the
standard car's drums, and enlargement to 10.1-in. of its vented front discs.

Beneath the new twincam cylinder head, the Scirocco uses Volkswagen's
standard inline-4 modified with greater oil pump capacity and special
piston-cooling oil jets.

C/D:

The clutch and the gearbox have both been strengthened, though the gear
ratios are largely unchanged (fifth gear has been lowered, from 0.89 to
0.91:1).
All four springs and shocks have been recalibrated, and the nose has been
lowered 0.4 inch
Finally, the rear anti-roll bar has been enlarged from 0.8 to 1.0 inch in
diameter.

VW&P:
. The front springs have again been made shorter (by 10 mm) and stiffer, a
24 mm rear anti-roll bar has been added, a front lower stress bar is now
standard equipment, the shocks have been recalibrated, and the car now has
four-wheel disc brakes
The exhaust system is stainless steel, which should last far longer than
the mid-steel version
Other features that should boost longevity are sodium-filled exhaust valves
and oil-cooled pistons. As a bonus, the l6V also has the larger oil pump
found on the turbo diesel, to help meet the extra lubricating demands.

MT:
To help put its robust new power-plant to best use, the Scirocco 16V GTX
has also received a major suspension revamp. Heavier springs have been
fitted up front, and upgraded shocks reside at each corner. The rear
anti-roll bar diameter has been upped from 20.5 to 24 mm, and ride height
lowered 10 mm
