steering wheel interchangeability ?

HI All,

A friend of mine recently picked up the four button steering wheel to 
replace his later squareish centred one, on a 1989 GT (1.8 carb UK model). 
The four button wheel came from the earlier sciroccos (I think a 1985 GTL).

He finds though that its doesn;t fit. The splined steering column is the 
wrong diameter. I thought that for the Sciroccos in particular and A1 cars 
in general, the steering column equipment remanied unchanged ?

I have had the four button and now the MKI three spoke on my 1987 Scala 
without a problem. Can anyone please correct me if they know the steering 
column equipment changed during the Sciroccos production (especially in the 
UK)?
