[TECH] replacing tie rods....

 ..on a car with power steering.  Car in question is 1987 16v rocco.  Bentley recommends removing the steering rack to remove the tie rods.  They also recommend removing the exhaust manifold in order to remove the steering rack.  Sounds pretty involved.  

Anyone been there done that and have any better ideas?  Bentley isn't always accurate in what you have to do to get the job done.  Case in point, Bentely recommends to remove the alternator and AC compressor when replacing the thermostat on a car with power steering.  Well, if you access the thermostat from below the car, all you have to do is remove the power steering pump and bracket.
