Scirocco GTI?

I know this is probably a dumb question, but were there any scirocco GTI's 
here in the states?  I stumbled across a white '79 scirocco yesterday.  It 
is badged as a GTI, the front badge looks to be a Rabbit GTI badge, but the 
rear is a red badge like an S badge, but then it has the word GTI instead of 
s, and the word GTI is painted white.
The car is toasted, floors among other things are gone, but it has a good 
front clip, TT aluminized 1.8 exaust, the rest of the no computer type fuel 
injection i need, and other things like a zender rear hatch spoiler, 
scirocco rear fill pannel between the lights, polly upper front strut 
bearings etc.  The guy wants quite a bit i think, asking $750, im thinking 
of offering him $250 ;)
