Removing A/C

Hey list,
I know that removing A/C has been addressed before here in the past and
there are 1 or 2 web site tech procedures on it but here is a different
twist:
I am putting in a 1.8 16v into my MK1 and I am looking to simplify the
process as much as possible. I am leaning toward NOT keeping the A/C for
this reason, but a bracket/pulley/belt mod would be needed. How about if I
could leave the A/C compressor in but not have it do anything other than
being nothing more than a kind of idler pulley. i.e. no
hoses/condenser/freon and the bit of plumbing that goes through the firewall
and in the interior. Any twist on this theory is what I am asking about.
would the compressor sans freon lack the nec. lubrication inside and burn up
in a day? This angle has not been discussed before that I am aware of. Any
opinions on this hair-brained idea would help. The intent would be
avoiding the bracket mod nec when not installing the a/c comp. I still have
available the stock 1.6 non a/c engine, and I will be comparing shaft
lengths of its alternator and possibly there is a hybrid type setup or
combination there.
Well you know what I mean...
