my troubles continue

well i found a break in the weather as well as in class and work, so today i gutted my cat.  that turned out to be an all day task since that stuff inside it is as hard as hell to break...well this didn't fix my problem...

for those who haven't been following my threads, the car is a 88 16v...as of late, it hasn't had any power and is un-drivable...when i try to get it into first, it is as if i'm starting in third...the temp light also comes on about thirty seconds after it's been running, and its a little louder than before...it does idle nice and smooth though, almost better than before...

so far i checked the downpipe and couldn't find any holes...and as stated before, i gutted the cat today...

so i need some suggestions...could it be my fuel filter? any way i can check it?  i need some help here...this sucks
