The last time I checked the South Africa web site (a year or so ago) they had TWO different A1 golfs, the original german design and the version produced in the US from 81-84.  I'm sure that complicates body panel comparisons a bit.  Apparently they ship the tooling for discontinued models down there and start production of a "new" South African model.
